Boiled Sports Is About To Enter “A World Of Pain”

Somebody was inevitably going to rain on the Penn State basketball fan’s parade, and Purdue blogger Boiled Sports has stepped up to the task. BS’s mindless drivel proceeds to mock PSU fans for celebrating their first-ever postseason tournament championship and paints the entire fanbase as “delusional” as if we suddenly believe that a Final Four berth is going to happen next year.

The real kicker in BS’s keyboard diarrhea though comes through this attempted analogy:

But hooray for PSU, I guess! Their championship tonight goes in the same trophy case as Purdue’s extremely-important Sun Bowl and Motor City Bowl trophies.

First of all, there’s 34 bowl games and all you have to do is beat that one opponent you face in the bowl game and you win a trophy. On the other hand, there’s only a few tournaments in college basketball and in the NIT at least, you have to go on a five-game win streak and face opponents of higher quality than a MAC football program.

Plus, there’s nearly 350 Division I college basketball teams out there and a much smaller percentage of them are playing in the postseason as opposed to the 68 out of 120 Division I football teams that see postseason action. So, while winning the NIT is undoubtedly inferior to winning the Big Dance, it still has a lot of meaning…particularly to a program with as little basketball tradition as Penn State. And it sure as hell has a lot more meaning than winning some crap bowl up in Detroit, if you saw the contingent of PSU fans in Madison Square Garden last night, I’m sure you’d know what I’m talking about…
